Abstract

In practice, only those processes that can often be reused, such as purchase order process, are usually automated using BPMN because of the high effort involved.

In the nursing sector however, a customized process is needed for each patient, which is often only run once for this patient and may have to be adapted to the changed patient’s health for the next run.

By developing a prototype, this paper investigates the hypothesis that encapsulation of a Camunda process-engine by a React application enables a nurse to specify the process necessary for the patient care as a nested to-do list on a tablet using drag-and-drop.

In this prototype complex sub-processes, modelled in BPMN for the execution of individual nursing tasks, are abstracted and encapsulated in such a way that a Lego-like system of coarse-grained and patient-specific configurable building blocks is created.

This hides unessential details and process complexity from the nurse.
